Hillel (my name, as it happens) does NOT mean "praise to God." It simply means "praised." The root consonants h-l-l convey the sense of praise, and the vowels make it passive.

The Hebrew word "hallelujah" means "praise God" and consists of the two words Hallelu (imperative plural form of h-l-l +u) and "Yah" (God).
