There are multiple origins and translations for the name Jerome:
1. Comes from the ancient Greek words ἱερός [ieros] + ὄνομα [onoma] meaning="who has a holy name; sacred name"
2. Greek name (Ιερώνυμος), derived from Ancient Greek (ἐρώμενος) [yeromenos] - "beloved boy".
Saint Jerome (Latin Hieronymus c. 347 - 420) was an Illyrian Christian priest and apologist. He was the son of Eusebius, of the city of Stridon, which was on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia. He is best known for his new translation of the Bible into Latin, which has since come to be called the Vulgate and his list of writings are extensive.
He is recognized by the Catholic Church as a Saint and Doctor of the Church, and his version of the Bible is still an important text in Catholicism. He is also recognized as a Saint by the Eastern Orthodox Church, where he is known as St. Jerome of Stridonium or Blessed Jerome.
