Persian name (میترا), derives from the proto-Indo-Iranian words mitra, + the root mi- "to bind" + the "tool suffix" -tra- ="causing to; that which causes binding", preserved in the Avestan word for "covenant, contract, oath". See Mitra.
Mithra - is the Avestan language name of the Zoroastrian divinity of covenant and oath.
In addition to being the divinity of contracts, Mithra is also a judicial figure, an all-seeing protector of Truth, and the guardian of cattle, the harvest and of The Waters. In Middle Iranian languages "Mithra" became "Mehr", "Myhr" etc., from which New Persian and Armenian Mihr ultimately derive.
