Derived from the Latin word capitolium - "small head, top of column" or from Latin caput - "head". It refers to Capitoline Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome, which haused a temple dedicated to the triple-deity named the Capitoline Triad. Feminine form of the name Capiton.

St Capitolina - was a martyred woman of Cappadocia, with her handmaid, Erotheis. They died in the persecutions conducted by Emperor Diocletian.
